It was March 8, 1857 when the garment workers, marched out through New York City with demands for shorter working hours, better pay, improved working condition and women's voting right. The procession was broken up by the cops. But that wasn't the end the story. 51 years later, March 8, 19o8, 15,000 women, of all generations came out with a similar march through the New York city with same demand -- added with it were an end to sweatshops and child labor.

It was not until the year 1910, at the Second International (a global socialist party congress) that March 8 was proclaimed to be International Women's Day by the German socialist and renowned revolutionary theoretician Clara Zetkin. Thus the March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day in the commemoration of US demonstrations as well as to honor women society (especially the working women) all over the world. Zetkin took the first step to sit with Lenin with an argument to restore women's rights.
